Court sends Councilor Mahesh Sharma to 6-day police custody in extortion case
A major fire broke out at the Sai Energy Building, a multi-storey commercial complex in the Thakdari area of Newtown, during the busy morning hours on Thursday. The incident, which reportedly started around 7:00 AM, saw thick plumes of black smoke billowing from the upper floors of the office building. Employees and residents of the nearby locality rushed out in panic as the flames began to spread rapidly from one floor to another, threatening the entire structure.
Emergency services were alerted immediately, and four fire engines were dispatched to the spot. Firefighters are currently working on a war footing to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading to adjacent buildings. While the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, preliminary reports from the site suggest that a short circuit in the electrical wiring might have triggered the incident.
Witnesses noted that the building houses various offices and a bakery. There is speculation that the fire may have originated in the bakery’s kitchen area before spreading through the internal shafts. As of now, the area remains cordoned off by the police, and vehicular movement in Thakdari has been restricted to facilitate the movement of fire tenders. No casualties or injuries have been reported so far, as most offices were just beginning their operations for the day.
The firefighting operations are proving difficult due to the height of the building and the intensity of the smoke trapped inside. Disaster management teams are also on standby. Office workers who arrived for their shifts were seen gathered at a distance, watching as the rescue teams battled the flames.
